The twins. We can no more separate these two little guys than you could separate the waters of the ocean. They cling to each other desperately and are men of few words. Looking behind their angelic faces and into their piercing eyes, it can be hard to find the spark of childhood innocence. They are children, who even before reaching puberty, have been forced to become men. Yet, with a history that would be hard for any adult to face, these two have persevered and maintain a positive and determined outlook on life.
Enduring a physically and emotionally abusive past at the hands of their father, these two boys can be timid and apprehensive at first meeting. However, after months of gentle care and counseling at our centre we are beginning to see something that has been missing for a long time—their wonderful heartwarming smiles.
Although their father has left the household and the boys no longer suffer his abusive outbursts, another challenge remains. The complete financial responsibility for the family has fallen solely and squarely onto their mother’s shoulders. And while she works long hours providing a laundry service out of her house, her income is often too small to support her family. Consequently the twins are forced to pick through garbage before and after school in hopes of finding scrape that can be traded in for money.
Currently the boys attend our free Academic Bridge Program and love to lose themselves in their studies. More so than any other students in our program, they view education as a way out of poverty. We are inspired by their persistent courage and are committed to helping them reach their goal. |
